I am delighted to introduce the ISR Update, a new electronic publication designed to link our alumni and friends around the world to news and information about the ISR community. This issue contains news about key leadership changes at ISR, and includes a wealth of research news about topics from consumer confidence and older Americans to the link between religion and college major. Irene Hess Memorial
Survey statistician Irene Hess, who educated generations of graduate students in the conduct of scientific surveys, died July 5 in Ann Arbor. A Memorial Service will be held on October 30, 2009, 3:00 – 5:00 pm in the Hussey Room at the Michigan League.

New normal? U.S. consumers coming back cautiously.
Richard Curtin told Reuters that it could be a decade or more for consumers to restore their sense of financial security to pre-recession levels.
On the 8th anniversary of 9/11, Wayne Baker told the Detroit News that discrimination against Arabs and Muslims in America persists because of continuing political conflicts in the Middle East.
An article in La Opinion reported on a free Internet site – www.usalearns.org – designed to help Spanish-speakers learn English. The site was tested by ISR researcher Jerome Johnston, who discusses the project in this video.
