Project Summary

The National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) gathers information on family life, marriage and divorce, pregnancy, infertility, use of contraception, and men's and women's health. The survey results are used by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and others to plan health services and health education programs, and to do statistical studies of families, fertility, and health. SRC's experience implementing the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) represents a long term partnership with a leading government data gathering agency. For this contract SRC worked in partnership with the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics to design, conduct, redesign, and conduct again the NSFG. The partnership has been successful at improving measurement, increasing efficiency, and delivering data more quickly. Through this partnership SRC scientists worked to redesign the NSFG to give the U.S. government more data for less money, using a continuous interviewing design and paradata driven, web-based centralized management.
Our current contract, 2010 - 2020, includes eight years of continuous data collection starting in September 2011 and ending in 2019. Every year, new Primary Sample Units will be selected to replace the previous year's non-self representing PSUs and self-representing PSUs, and the project will continue to collect data from a set of major self representing PSUs throughout the entire data collection period. Target number of interviews is approximately 5,000 per year.
