ANN ARBOR – The Institute for Social Research (ISR) is welcoming a new managing director. Thom Madden will step into that role on Monday, May 9.
Madden has extensive experience in higher education administration, guiding institutions in shaping their strategy on finance, research administration, and budgeting. He most recently served as the University of Dayton’s associate vice president for financial services. In that capacity, he led finance and accounting operations for the university, supporting financial reporting and management, expense management, and audit preparation.
“Thom has a reputation as a collaborative leader who builds strong relationships with his team,” said Kate Cagney, director of the Institute for Social Research. “This is essential for us, as collaboration is fundamental to ISR’s mission. I know that ISR will benefit from his experience and strategic insights.”
Prior to his work at the University of Dayton, Thom filled several positions at the University of Michigan. Starting in 2013, he led the effort to develop and implement an administrative shared services model for the university. As the Senior Project Director, he spearheaded a comprehensive campus engagement strategy to support transition to the Shared Service Center. During this time, he worked closely with the Provost’s Office and the Deans and Directors from the Schools, Colleges, and Centers.
“I couldn’t be more excited to join ISR as the managing director and to be back at the University of Michigan,” said Madden. “I have a great passion for research and am humbled to be working with such an impactful team of research scientists, faculty, staff, and students. I look forward to working with the five centers and the CIS team to ensure administrative effectiveness and efficiency centered on ISR’s mission and strategic planning goals.”
