BIO

Dr. Josh Ehrlich is faculty in the Institute for Social Research (Survey Research Center) and the Medical School (Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences), as well as Associate Director of the Center for Global Health Equity and University of Michigan. He leads a research program on the population science of global aging and has an interest in how sensory health (vision, hearing, etc) shapes aging, health, retirement, and well-being. His work bridges demography, epidemiology, the social sciences, clinical medicine, and public policy to redefine how societies approach aging and equity.

One of his team’s flagship projects, LOSHAK (the Longitudinal Study of Health and Ageing in Kenya) provides unprecedented insights into aging in Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, informing policies for healthier, more equitable longevity. His research also explores sensory health as a lens to understand aging, health, and well-being through initiatives like SENSE Network and Mi-SHARC, collaboratives that are dedicated to interdisciplinary research, training, and policy translation.

Dr. Ehrlich’s research is funded by Gates Ventures and the US National Institutes of Health, including the National Institute on Aging, National Eye Institute, and Fogarty International Center. His research and commentary have appeared in The New York Times, CNN, and The Lancet Global Health, and he frequently speaks on how science can inform fairer, healthier aging worldwide.
