Education and Well-Being (EWB)

ISR, SRC

Project Summary

The Education and Well-Being (EWB) program was established in 2008 to advance research focused on improving the teaching of reading and mathematics, particularly in schools serving high percentages of students in poverty. Contributions of EWB include the development of innovative methods for studying the “inner workings” of schools and strengthening the role of survey research in education.

EWB researchers and their collaborators pioneered new approaches to measuring teachers’ instructional practices, developed improved methods for assessing teachers’ content and pedagogical knowledge, and advanced strategies of causal inference for estimating the effects of teaching on students’ academic achievement. The publications, tools, and collaborative networks associated with the EWB program continue to inform education research and practice across the globe.

A hallmark of the EWB initiative is its emphasis on interdisciplinary partnerships, bringing together researchers from multiple fields who work in school settings but may not traditionally identify as education researchers. This collaborative model supports a broader understanding of the interrelationships among children’s academic, socio-emotional, health, and mental health outcomes across the life course. The resulting body of research and intervention development extends beyond school reform to include approaches addressing the wider conditions that influence student well-being.
