ANN ARBOR–Researchers navigating the recent changes in the NIH Data Management and Sharing policy on data sharing now have several new online resources from ICPSR, including webinar recordings and a resource page with guidance for the University of Michigan and broader research community.

Below are some key questions and answers about how ICPSR is providing personalized support to U-M and other researchers working with the new policy.

How is ICPSR helping people navigate the new NIH data-sharing system?

1. A dedicated staffer: “We know there are a lot of questions about navigating the new NIH policy,” said ICPSR’s Amy Pienta. “That’s one of the reasons ICPSR now has a dedicated data project manager to focus on creating these valuable resources and providing personalized support to U-M researchers,” Pienta said.
2. Training, individual guidance, and templates to help researchers in the social, behavioral, and health sciences respond to the NIH’s 2023 Data Management and Sharing Policy.
3. Two new instructional videos (Part I and Part II) in the “Share Your NIH (and other) Data” series offer step-by-step guidance on data preparation and sharing.
4. Templates and documents including:
   • A cost structure and budget justification for NIH budgets
   • A Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan template pre-filled to address NIH requirements
   • Informed consent language to use when collecting data
   • A checklist to help prepare data for ICPSR deposit
   • Guidance on submitting data to ICPSR

Are these resources accessible to anyone?
These resources from ICPSR are for everyone and will be of special interest to NIH investigators at any phase of the research process.

Does ICPSR offer data management training?
ICPSR has a long history of assisting investigators with data management training. Most recently on June 24, 2024, ICPSR hosted its first annual NIH-related Summer Program Workshop, “How to Work with ICPSR to Respond to the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy.” The workshop catered to those planning and running projects where the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy applies and investigators were able to discuss their particular needs and challenges related to their field of study with expert staff. Several training webinars are also available on ICPSR’s Youtube Channel: Designating ICPSR in your NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan and Navigating NIH’s Data Management & Sharing Policy with ICPSR’s NIH-Funded Projects.
